How to see the literal meanings of each character in a word
2. How to see the literal meanings of each character in a word
This is a great habit and really helps you build a deeper connection with Chinese characters.

When you’re watching content on YouTube with Language Reactor:

  • Hover over any word. First, you’ll see its frequency. (If it’s a high-frequency word, you should definitely learn it. If it’s not high-frequency, it can stay as passive vocabulary. That means you only need to recognize it when listening; you don’t need to actively use it.)

  • You can also hear the standard pronunciation and see how the word is used in other example sentences.

  • Next, click “Wi” (Wiktionary). This opens up a breakdown of the word into its individual characters and shows each character’s literal meanings. This helps you really “feel” the character, since one Chinese character often carries multiple meanings.
